Maserati is a luxury Italian sports and racing automobile first made in 1914. It was manufactured to compete directly with other European cars like Aston Martin, Jaguar, BMW and Audi. The company has gone through many changes and is now owned by Fiat.

The first car was developed by the Maserati brothers. The 2 liter engine with stylish design did not do well on the racing circuit and thus, bigger cars with 4-16 cylinders were made one after the other. Maserati was a small company in the 30s but yet competed well with Mercedes and Audi. After the 2nd world war, many engineers from Fiat and Alfa Romeo joined Maserati and the new Maserati 4-CLT and A6 series were developed. In the 50s, Maserati continued to dominate the racing circuit. Newer cars during the 60s included the Mistral, Vignale, and the Quattroporte. With financial crises in the late 60s, Citroen took over the ownership and built the Maserati Bora and Merak.

After some turbulent few years, the company restructured the car and built the front engine rear drive coupe like the Maserati Turbo. Other Maserati cars produced in the 80s include the Shamal, Ghibli and the Racing. The company worked together with Chrysler and tried to enter the American market. Chrysler tried to modify the Maserati but the success was short lived. Even though the Maserati 3200 GT was fast and elegant, it was also expensive.

In 1999, Ferrari took over part of the ownership and brought it back from the brink of bankruptcy. Today, Maserati is back under Fiat's control. Fiat continues to produce the sporty and luxury sedans. In the American Market, only about 2000 maserati car sell each year.

The Maserati Quattroporte and the Gran Turisomo have done well and brought the company back in the green. In 2003, the MC 12 was released and at $700,000 per car, only a hand few have been sold. With the current economic gloom, Maserati will either have to make something cheaper for the consumer to buy or close shop.

After initially buying Lotus in the mid eighties, GM sold off the company in 1993 to a holdings company owned by the Bugatti motor company, Artioli. The selling price was thirty million pounds, later seeing Artioli sell a major stake of the company to Proton. Proton, a Malaysian based car manufacture was established in 1983, controlled by the former PM, Mahathir Mohamad.

A lucrative aspect of the Lotus business is its consultancy services for other car and motor manufactures who seek help with suspension and engines. Often behind the development of the four cylinder engine found in many other makes under the GM umbrella, Lotus has developed engines for Vauxhalls and Saab cars, although outsourcing from Toyota for the iconic Elise model. Currently Lotus is split into two groups, the Lotus Cars Group, and the Lotus Engineering Group.

Lincoln Logo

Founded by American automobile pioneer Henry Leland in 1917, Lincoln would define the American luxury vehicle for decades to come. Leland was a master machinist who started out by making guns during the Civil War. He later moved on to creating micrometers and other machine tools that require low tolerances in size variation. His exposure to precision engineering enabled him to vastly improve existing car engines and for a time, his firm supplied the engines of Oldsmobiles. This same engine would power the Cadillac, a car he founded which he would later sell to General Motors to establish the Lincoln Motor Company. Deviating from the practice of naming cars after their creators, Leland christened his new venture Lincoln as a tribute to his hero and the first president he voted for - Abraham Lincoln. Ford acquired Lincoln in 1922 and has since become Ford's luxury automobile marque.

Lincoln initially built Liberty aircraft engines during World War 1 then shifted to car production after the war. The first vehicle to roll out of the assembly lines, the Lincoln L, displayed superb engineering with its precision built Lincoln parts. Although technically brilliant, the Lincoln L's appearance was rather behind the times. This was to change when Lincoln became a subsidiary of Ford. Edsel Ford wanted a prestige car to expand his company's lineup, one that would exhibit the streamlined looks of European models. Ford created a styling studio just for this purpose and he employed skilled coachbuilders to dress up his Lincolns. The Zephyr, which came out in 1936, was an instant success, beguiling the American public with its flowing lines. The Zephyr would later serve as basis for the original Lincoln Continental, considered by many critics to be one of the two most beautiful production cars ever manufactured in America. In the 1970s, Ford introduced the Town Car package to the Continental line, featuring amenities like leather seats and wood appliqu├ęs. In 1980 the Lincoln Town Car would be offered as a separate line. To attract younger buyers to the brand, Lincoln introduced the Navigator in 1998, the first true full-sized luxury sport-utility vehicle. It was huge success and helped Lincoln secure the title of best-selling luxury brand in the United States.

Lincoln shares with Cadillac the distinction of providing limousines for the Unites States presidents. The first Presidential Lincoln was a Lincoln V12 convertible for Franklin Roosevelt called the "Sunshine Special". Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson used a 1950 Lincoln Cosmopolitan nicknamed the "Bubble Top". Kennedy was assassinated while riding in a 1961 Lincoln Continental convertible and the car underwent a major security-related overhaul after the incident. Nixon used a 1969 Lincoln Continental while Presidents Ford, Carter, Reagan, and Bush rode in a 1972 Lincoln. The last Lincoln for presidential use as of 2004 was the Lincoln 1989; the current United States President's limousine is a Cadillac.
